Note About High School Language Study
Each year of language study is roughly equivalent to one semester of college
study in the beginning and intermediate course sequence.
Proficiency Credit
Oakton offers two ways to earn language proficiency credit to any student
officially accepted who has earned at least six credits at Oakton with
a grade of C of better:
- Apply for College Level Examination Program (CLEP) exams, available
in French, German, and Spanish.
- Request proficiency credit for lower level coursed at the beginning/intermediate
sequence after completing the same number of hours in the higher level
course with a grade of A of B.

College Credit Courses Offered
Unless otherwise indicated, each course is available in Arabic, Chinese,
French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Russian, and
Spanish.
- Modern Language 101:
Beginning Language I
Stresses pronunciation, diction, grammar, vocabulary, and reading. No
prerequisite. 4 credits
- Modern Language 102:
Beginning Language II
Continues101, with increased emphasis on reading and writing. Prerequisite:
101 or equivalent background. 4 credits
- Modern Language 105:
Conversational Arabic, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean,
Polish, Russian, or Spanish.
Concentrates on speaking skills; provides additional oral practice after
the beginning level.
Prerequisite: 102 or equivalent background. 3 credits
- Modern Language 201:
Intermediate Language II
Review of grammar and continued development of speaking, reading and
writing, Prerequisite: 102 or equivalent background. 4 credits
- Modern Language 202:
Intermediate Language II
Continues 210, with extensive reading and further practice in speaking
and writing. Prerequisite: 201 or equivalent background. 4 credits
- Modern Language 205:
French, German, Japanese, or Spanish Conversation and Composition. Reinforces
oral and written communication skills through a variety of speaking
and writing activities. Topics are drawn from contemporary life and
culture. Prerequisite: 202 or equivalent background.
3 credits
- Modern Language 210:
Introduction to French, German, or Spanish Literature
Readings of selected masterpieces from various periods. Discussion and
written work in the foreign language. Prerequisite: 202 or equivalent
background. 3 credits.
- Japanese 206: Japanese
Conversation and Reading
Course reinforces oral and written communication skills. Content includes
a variety of speaking and essay-writing activities, and develops reading
ability with Japanese materials. Topics are drawn from classical and
contemporary life and culture. Prerequisite: JPN 202 or consent of instructor.
3 credits.

Global Studies/Study Abroad
Through Oakton’s membership in the Illinois Consortium
for International Studies and Programs, Oakton students may study in
Canterbury, England, or Salzburg, Austria. Currently the college offers
summer language and culture programs in Costa Rica, France, Germany,
Japan, and Mexico. Two week exchanges in the Netherlands are available
to students enrolled in several career programs. Oakton faculty also
occasionally offers opportunities for short term field study at off
campus locations. Most recently, destinations have included Western
Europe and North America.
