Glenna Sprague, professor of music, teaches piano, class piano, music literature and history at the College, where she also serves as music coordinator. In addition, she directs and conducts the internationally acclaimed Oakton Six Piano Ensemble which she founded in 1980. An active performer, clinician, and adjudicator in the Chicago area, she has written numerous articles for national music journals, including American Music Teacher and Keyboard Companion. She has served as a panelist for the Illinois Arts Council, National Conference of Piano Pedagogy, National Group and Piano Pedagogy Forum, and Illinois Board of Higher Education.

Sprague is a magna cum laude graduate of the Conservatory of Music at Capital University and earned her master’s degree in piano performance from Ohio University.

 

Mike Adamczyk

Michael Adamczyk has been a member of the College’s music faculty since 1980. He teaches guitar and class guitar, and directs the choir and guitar ensemble.

He has played in recitals throughout the Chicago and Northern Indiana area, performing music from classical to klezmer. An international composer, his music for guitar solo and ensemble has been performed by leading guitarists. A film that he composed and performed the music for, received an honorable mention award at the Chicago Film Festival. The author of The Know-It-All Guitar Book, Adamczyk also served as an organist and choir director for numerous churches in the Chicago area.

He has a bachelor’s degree in music from DePaul University and a master’s degree in music from the University of Notre Dame. He studied with Richard Pick, a preeminent classical guitarist.

 

Eileen Berman

Eileen Berman has been a voice instructor at the College since 1987. She is noted for her success as a soprano in leading roles with the Chicago Opera Theatre. According to a Chicago Tribune music critic, Berman has the “right voice and presence.” She also has performed with many symphony orchestras, including the Halevi Choral Society, where she was a featured soloist on one of the group’s recordings. In addition to operas and symphonies, Berman has performed as a soloist at many churches and temples in the Chicago area.

Berman received a bachelor’s degree in music from Roosevelt University and a master’s degree from Northeastern Illinois University.

 

Dan Detloff

Dan Detloff is professor of music and has been teaching at the College since 1972. He currently teaches music theory, aural skills, voice, and conducting. Throughout the Midwest, Detloff has been heard as a soloist and recitalist. From 1969 to 1974, he was a member of the Chicago Symphony Chorus, where he was understudy soloist with conductor Georg Solti.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in music education from North Park College University and a master’s degree in music education from Northwestern University, where he was a fellowship assistant to Margaret Hillis, chair of the choral department.

 

Mark Olen
Trumpet and Brass instruments

Mark Olen has been a trumpet instructor at the College since 1994. A graduate of Indiana University, Olen is a celebrated recording artist with more than two decades of musical experience.

A highly sought after professional lead, classical, and jazz trumpeter, Olen is the founder of the group Brassworks Brass. He has performed with many top entertainers, including Tony Bennett, Al Jarreau, Michael Bolton, Aretha Franklin, Natalie Cole, B. B. King, Bobby McFerrrin, and David Foster. He has also appeared with trumpet luminaries Arturo Sandoval, Maynard Ferguson, Jon Faddis, Doc Severinsen, and Roy Hargrove. Olen’s versatility is evidenced by his performances with the Chicago Jazz Ensemble, American Jazz Philharmonic, Chicago Jazz Orchestra, Ravinia Festival Orchestra, Grant Park Symphony, and Chicago Brass Quintet.

Olen also teaches music at the University of Illinois at Chicago and College of Lake County.

 

Carey Polacek
Clarinet; Flute; Saxophone; Woodwind Ensemble; Jazz Combo; Jazz Band

At the College, Carey Polacek teaches saxophone, clarinet, and flute. She also directs the woodwind ensemble, jazz combo, and the award-winning Jazz Band. Polacek has performed throughout the U.S., Canada, and Europe.

A former instructor at the Merit School of Music, Polacek maintains a private studio. Also an instructor for the British School of Performing Arts, Polacek received a master’s degree in music performance from Northwestern University, and a bachelor’s degree in music performance from Bowling Green State University.

 

Bret Sher
Percussion

A percussion instructor at the College since 1995, Bret Sher is a featured Chicago musician and recording artist who has opened for entertainers, including Bill Cosby, Jerry Goodman, and Gill Scott Heron.

A member of the Illinois Air National Guard 566th Air Force Band for 20 years, Sher has performed at Grant Park, Taste of Chicago, Disney World, Disneyland, and the Pentagon. In addition to his teaching and performing duties, Sher has given percussion clinics throughout the United States.

He received his degree in music performance and music education from Illinois State University. Sher also is a music instructor at New Trier High School and Wheeling High School.

 

Arnold Sklar
Violin; Viola

Arnold Sklar is a violin and viola instructor for the College and is the principal violinist for the Northbrook Symphony. He also performs with the Highland Park Strings, the Park Ridge Symphony, and various chamber groups. His vast musical experience includes performing with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and the Grant Park Orchestra for 40 years.

He is a former violin and viola instructor at the Music Institute of Chicago in Winnetka, where he was the conductor of the Adult Chamber Orchestra. He received his bachelor’s degree in music education and his master’s degree in viola from the University of Miami. Sklar also is a music instructor at Glenbrook North High School and Glenbrook South High School.
