Congratulations to Katherine Schuster, coordinator of Global Studies and Madhuri Deshmukh,
Professor of English
,

who have been awarded a $68,000 Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad grant from the US Department of Education. They will lead a team of faculty from eight different Illinois community colleges, Loyola University, and Evanston Township High School on a 5 week study program in India this summer. Their project is titled
"In Search of Gandhi's India: Teaching and Learning Non-Violence in a Globalized World.

Mohamed Mehdi

Welcome
Dr. Mohamed Mehdi

The Department of Humanities and Philosophy is extremely pleased to announce that Dr. Mohamed Mehdi will be joining the full-time faculty at Oakton this fall. This is the culmination of an extensive search that included scores of eminently qualified applicants. Dr. Mehdi received his Ph.D. from McGill University in Montreal earlier this year. His dissertation is titled: "The Political Dimension of the Contemplative Life: Engagement and Disengagement in Plato, Seneca and Gandhi"

As his dissertation might suggest, Mohamed specializes in Political Philosophy, Ancient Philosophy, and Modern Indian Philosophy.
Despite spending most of his life in Canada, he has strong ties to the Chicago area, including a stint teaching at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Dr. Mehdi brings with him a wealth of interdisciplinary teaching experience that will serve Oakton students well. We are very much looking forward to his contributions to our department.

Please join me in extending a warm welcome to Mohamed when he arrives in August 2008.
