Mission and Core Values Statement

The Honors Program offers intellectually curious and academically engaged students the opportunity to participate in a challenging small college environment in the context of the Oakton community in order that they may develop their minds and talents and contribute effectively to society. To this end the Honors Program provides rigorous, innovative, and student-centered sections of general education classes and interdisciplinary seminars, as well as opportunities for research and further study through Honors contracts in regular classes. We provide students with as rigorous and substantial a preparation for upper-level work as they would have received at a four-year college or university. We also provide special Honors academic counseling through the Honors Office and the Honors Counselor, and offer workshops, publications, and special assistance to students as they decide on transfer institutions, prepare their applications, seek financial aid and prepare to transfer. Finally, the Honors Program fosters community among Honors students and between students and faculty in small classes and through a program of co-curricular activities, an Honors Student Organization, off-campus workshops and seminars, and other special events.

Honors Program

Honors at Oakton offers you all the advantages of a traditional liberal arts education - small classes, distinguished faculty, and challenging courses with other bright, interested and motivated students.

Honors at Oakton is designed for students who have the ability to succeed anywhere, but who choose to remain close to home and obtain a quality education at an affordable cost.

Honors courses are student-centered and prepare students to transfer to competitive colleges and universities and to read, write and think at a high level in their jobs.

There are two ways to participate in the Honors Program at Oakton Community College. Students admitted to Honors may

  • take one or several Honors classes in areas of their interest (designated on the transcript as Honors courses), or
  • pursue the Honors Program Certificate, which requires 18 hours of Honors course work including one Honors Core Seminar

To be admitted to Honors at Oakton you must have two of the following:
  • a 3.5 GPA at any college
  • an ACT score of 25
  • graduation in the top 20% of your high school class or a GED of 300
  • an instructor recommendation.
