Learning Outcomes

The Computer Applications for Business curriculum provides students with the workplace training and education needed for now and for the future.

The CAB curriculum serves students with a variety of career and academic goals:

  • It prepares students to use application software to solve business problems and increase efficiency in the workplace.
  • It provides education for office careers by focusing on developing human relations skills, communication skills, as well as skills in modern office technology systems and procedures. The sophistication of the office systems technology field demands trained and competent personnel, and the College offers the opportunity for this training for careers as administrative assistants, office managers, directors of information support systems, office supervisors, word processing managers, trainers, marketing support representatives, desktop publishers, and office automation specialists.
  • It serves other academic departments by offering specific software courses and instruction to support their needs.

The goal of the program is to help students compete in today's world of technology and achieve success in computer-related occupations in whatever field they choose to pursue

Associate Degree in Applied Science

This degree is designed to prepare students for positions as highly trained professionals. Students must complete 18 hours of general education courses as well as 42 hours of major requirements including two tracks: Desktop Publishing or Office Technology. Upon completion, the student will have the technology and interpersonal skills, responsibility, initiative, confidence, and decision making ability necessary to be a contributing member of an effective office team.

Learning Objectives

Students who complete this program will be able to:

  • Define computer information technology vocabulary, concepts, and skills.
  • Use the computer, communication skills, and related information technology to achieve business objectives.
  • Demonstrate competence with a wide variety of electronic tools.
  • Demonstrate competence in communicating information effectively both in writing and orally
  • Communicate, and if necessary, interpret technical tasks to non-technical personnel
  • Demonstrate the ability to effectively prioritize, plan, and organize resources for task completion
  • Recognize the social and ethical issues which face users of computer information technology and behave appropriately
  • Define and solve problems individually and with groups, using a variety of resources and methods, including technology and communicate findings effectively in writing and in speech.

Administrative Assistant Certificate

This 24 credit hour certificate program prepares students for positions as administrative assistants and office assistants. Students acquire strong skills in Information Technology, current industry, applications software, office procedures, human relation and written communications skills. In addition, the program emphasizes critical thinking and decision making skills, keyboarding, proofreading, document formatting and language skills.

  • Describe basic administrative duties and responsibilities.
  • Use current and emerging word processing technologies to produce organizational documents and presentation materials.
  • Compose business correspondence and create graphics and electronic presentations on a computer.
  • Perform the current speed and accuracy requirements for typing and 10-key operation in a business environment.
  • Manage individually and collaboratively multiple office tasks, prioritizing and reprioritizing in response to changing demands.
  • Describe office functions as they contribute to sound business practices and procedures.
  • Employ information technology to support management.

Executive Administrative Professional Certificate

This 35 credit hour certificate program is designed to prepare students who are currently employed or are seeking employment at the executive level and wish to raise their level of professionalism, expertise, and qualifications into the executive support, administrative assistant, or managerial positions within a company. This program combines business management with administrative skills.

After completing this certificate, the student will:

  • Demonstrate written and oral communications skills as they relate to various business situations.
  • Display critical thinking skills to solve business problems.
  • Demonstrate competence with a wide variety of software tools.
  • Use effective software tools to produce organizational documents and presentation materials.
  • Use effective software tools to perform basic arithmetic, statistical, and financial functions.
  • Use listening skills learned as they relate to various business situations.
  • Guide executive management in important aspects of business etiquette.
  • Employ information technology to support executive management.
  • Manage individually and collaboratively multiple office tasks, prioritizing and reprioritizing in response to changing demands.

Office Assistant Certificate

This 16 credit hour certificate program is designed for the students with good keyboarding skills and an interest in office employment as well as for the students who need to upgrade their knowledge of current office technology. The program emphasizes computer applications skills and basic office skills with an emphasis in word processing.

  • Use current and emerging word processing technologies to produce organizational documents and presentation materials.
  • Perform the current speed and accuracy requirements for typing and 10-key operation in a business environment.

General Office Certificate

This is a 9 credit hour certificate, which allows a student to prepare for entry level and near entry level office-administrative positions.

  • Demonstrate competence with word processing technologies to produce basic documents.
  • Perform the current speed and accuracy requirements for typing and 10-key operation in an office environment.

Creative Software Specialist Certificate

This 15 credit hour certificate program is designed to prepare students for a career in the business industry where desktop publishing software (Creative Software) is used. This certificate equips students with desktop publishing skills as used in a business environment. The program emphasizes the creation of publication-ready documents such as newsletters, brochures, advertisements, magazines, books and marketing materials that are publication quality. Students explore and master the latest software tools, including: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, and word processing software.

  • Identify tools and uses of those tools in the program environment.
  • Incorporate tools, production and technology.
  • Produce publication-ready documents.
  • Execute print production, electronic publishing and Website images.

Creative Software Master Certificate

This 30 credit hour certificate program is a continuation of the Creative Software Specialist certificate. The program goes beyond the specialist certificate by including more in-depth concepts and procedures, marketing, and advanced class instruction. It is designed to enhance a student’s current employment position, as well as provide new employment opportunities.

After completing this certificate, the student will:

  • Explain the desktop publishing cycle.
  • Identify tools and uses of those tools in the program environment.
  • Incorporate tools, production and technology to produce publication-ready documents.
  • Apply fundamental design principles.
  • Apply techniques used to composite, edit, and manipulate digital images.
  • Use creative software for the Web Design.
  • Execute print production, electronic publishing and Website images.
  • Provide instruction in creating publications for the work environment.

Microsoft Office User Certificate

This is a 7 credit hour certificate giving the student in-depth knowledge of the Microsoft Office programs Word, Excel, and Power Point, productivity software programs. It is designed as a fast-track certificate, which may be earned in one semester.

Learning Objectives

After completing this certificate, the student will:

  • Demonstrate competency in at least two software application packages.
  • Demonstrate competency and appropriate use of the software tools within software application programs.
  • Create a variety of personal and business files, which include; documents, spreadsheets, and presentations.
  • Apply critical thinking skills to solve business problems.

Microsoft Office Specialist

This 11 credit hour certificate program is designed to prepare the student with the business use of Microsoft office programs. The student will be trained for the use of Microsoft Office Software in any business position which the student may hold now or hold in the future. It is designed as a fast-track certificate, which may be earned in one or two semesters.

Microsoft Office Advanced Specialist Certificate

This 15 credit-hour certificate prepares students for the use advanced Microsoft Office software tools used in a business office environment. Today, virtually all business jobs, at all levels, require the use of Microsoft Office, frequently to an extensive degree, and frequently using advanced features. This program will allow the student to gain experience with frequently used advanced features. This is an excellent opportunity for any student who wishes to prepare for and take a Microsoft Certification exam to become certified by Microsoft.

  • Demonstrate competency in at least three software application packages.
  • Demonstrate competency and appropriate use by utilizing advanced application tools within each software program.
  • Use critical thinking skills to analyze and solve business problems.
  • Demonstrate competency in managing files and folders.
  • Demonstrate preparedness for the Microsoft Certification exam.
