TheAdvising and Counseling Center coordinates advising services for Oakton Community College. The College recommends that all students receive academic advising to ensure that the courses selected will meet personal objectives.

New students who

  • intend to enroll full time (12 or more credit hours per semester) or
  • intend to earn a degree or certificate or
  • plan to transfer to another college
should attend one of the advising and registration workshops offered by Oakton before classes begin.

These workshops are designed for small groups- 5-10 people- in order to give new students personal attention regarding course selection and registration. Students are informed of the schedule for the workshops and invited to the sessions shortly after being accepted for admission to Oakton.

New students may not receive this invitation, however, if they are accepted at Oakton and/or register within a month of the start of a term. When this happens, students should schedule an advising appointment through the Advising and Counseling Center during the first month of enrollment.

Current students should seek advising routinely because of changes in individual goals, transfer institution expectations and Oakton degree and certificate requirements. Before registering for the 24th credit hour, students who have not previously been advised may be required to contact the Advising and Counseling Center. Students should schedule advising at least one month prior to the start of each term by contacting the Advising and Counseling Center.

Continuing Education. Advising is always available, but not required for registration, for

  • students taking a course for enrichment, skill development or other personal reasons or
  • students not necessarily working towards a degree or
  • part-time students (1-11 semester credit hours).
Assessment Tests
Assessment tests are part of the advising process at Oakton. All students who intend to enroll in a math or English course must take an assessment test or provide transcripts demonstrating successful completion of classes at another college or university. The assessment tests help the College place students in the appropriate class level.

Students who do not intend to enroll in a math or English class do not have to take assessment tests. However, after a student has completed 12 semester hours, s/he must take assessment tests, whether or not s/he intends to enroll in an English or math class.

The Transfer Center
The Transfer Center in Advising and Counseling serves students intending to transfer to four-year colleges and universities. The Center offers transfer planning workshops, group visits to four-year schools and advice on scholarships and financial aid. Advisors and a transfer specialist are available for student questions. Information is available from the Des Plaines campus, (847) 635-1741, and the Ray Hartstein Campus, (847) 635-1417.

Illinois Virtual Campus

Oakton participates in the Illinois Virtual Campus, an online catalog of distance learning courses and programs across the state. We feel it is an excellent enhancement to the learning available through Oakton.
