Information

To receive "need-based" financial assistance, a student must:

  • Demonstrate financial need through the federal application process (www.fafsa.ed.gov).
  • Have earned a high school diploma or a General Education Development (GED) certificate. To find your GED transcript go to the American Council on Education Web site at www.acenet.edu.
  • Be enrolled in an associate’s degree program or a certificate program of 16 credit hours or more.
  • Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  • Have a valid Social Security number.
  • Comply with the Academic Progress Requirements for Financial Aid Recipients.
  • Register for Selective Service, if required (www.sss.gov).
  • Enroll in six or more credit hours of 100-level or higher coursework for maximum consideration.

Ineligible Majors

The Oakton majors in our credit program (listed below), do not meet the U.S. Department of Education financial aid eligibility guidelines. Academic programs must be more than 16 credit hours or taught by Oakton faculty at least 50 percent of the time to qualify for aid. This is important information when completing your application for admission to Oakton.

Noncredit classes and noncredit programs are also ineligible.

If you are not eligible for financial aid based on your Oakton major, there are a few options available. A student may choose to change a major (course of study), by the midterm date of the semester, through Oakton’s Office of Registration and Records or participate in the FACTS Tuition Payment Plan. If you change your major (course of study) please personally inform the Office of Student Financial Assistance of the change. Questions regarding FACTS are best answered in Oakton’s Cashier Office.

Note: This list is subject to change as institutional guidelines, academic programs, and financial aid policies change. Please refer any questions to the Oakton Community College Office of Student Financial Assistance.
