When College Just Can’t Wait
Theresa Bashiri-Remetio knew returning to college would require some serious short-term sacrifices. After all, she was working two jobs when she enrolled at Oakton in 2006. “Part of me wanted to wait,” she admits, “but I’m glad I didn’t. Earning my associate’s degree was hectic to say the least, but it was also memorable.”

Bashiri-Remetio thrived at Oakton, joining Phi Theta Kappa, the honor society for two-year colleges, before going on to earn her bachelor’s degree in economics and marketing at Elmhurst College. In 2011, she returned to Oakton to complete her certified public accounting certificate, this time juggling not only a job as a junior staff accountant, but motherhood as well.

Though her undergraduate days are over, Bashiri-Remetio returns to Oakton often. A former Student Trustee on the College’s Board, she was elected to fill a regular two-year term in April 2013. “I am thrilled to once again have the opportunity to serve. I feel honored to be able to support an institution that has done so much for me.”

Some days, Bashiri-Remetio, who is studying for her CPA exam and applying to graduate schools, can’t believe how far she’s come. “I emigrated from the Philippines less than ten years ago with no idea what my future might hold. Now, I’m a senior staff accountant for Colliers International in Rosemont, happily married, and working toward providing the life I’d always hoped for my son, Bryce.”
