In the Nick of Time
Like many people, Holly Morresi is trying to weather the harsh economic climate. Receiving the Ann and James LaPalermo Scholarship came just in the nick of time.
Receiving the LaPalermo scholarship literally is a blessing. I remember thumbing though an Oakton catalog but had no means of paying for classes. Without the scholarship, I could not have afforded to return to college on my own to pursue a career in manufacturing.
In 1996, I earned my undergrad degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology. However, many of my marketing skills are now obsolete so I need to increase my proficiency. Currently I’m working toward my certificate in Transportation, Warehousing, and Logistics and I plan on using my new skills to get the import/export business I started in 2002 off the ground.
Returning to college hasn’t been easy, especially with two girls at home. It took me eight hours just to write a three-page paper! But this time around, I value education so much more. As a younger student, I just got by; now I find myself absorbing all the material that I learn. My appetite for learning and continuing education has really been stimulated at Oakton.
Going through hard times is never easy. It’s been a purging process requiring a lot of self-examining. It’s important that I don’t lose perspective and have a vision. Thanks to Oakton I am preparing to move forward and I can finally see a light at the end of the tunnel.
