Discovering the "Reel" Oakton

Jennifer Carrillo, a film enthusiast and psychology buff, went beyond the basic general education requirements to discover flexible learning options at Oakton.

In high school, I was very involved with my school's broadcasting program, and I learned a lot about film editing and producing. Coming to Oakton, I knew I wanted to pursue my interest in the field, but I didn't want to start at the beginning again. So, I enrolled in an independent study course. Under the guidance of knowledgeable faculty, I produced a music video from planning to final editing. It was cool to be able to have control over the entire creative process and still earn college credit.

In addition to my film pursuits, I studied psychology, took general education requirements that will transfer to most four-year institutions, and became involved in student activities, such as the GBLT club and the student ambassador program.

For me, being fully involved at Oakton has really afforded an ideal college experience. Though I will leave Oakton to pursue a bachelor's degree, my experience at the College has been rewarding - both personally and academically. With the help of guiding faculty, friendly staff, and a diverse student body, my time spent at Oakton has been unique, memorable, and exactly what I needed.
