MOSAICS - FEE: $150
Mosaics are beautiful designs crafted from materials as diverse as ceramic tile, stone, glass, and marbles. These works are found in churches, museums, and galleries, as well as on kitchen countertops and fireplaces. They can be representational or abstract, traditional or contemporary, simple or extremely complex. Create your own mosaics under the guidance of Francine Gourguechon, a noted mosaic artisan and installer who has been featured in the Chicago Tribune. Develop a sense of design, balance, and artistic harmony while learning about application of materials. Students are asked to bring tile nippers (available at most hardware stores for about $8) and an appropriate item to mosaic such as a 10-inch terra cotta flowerpot or other item with a rigid surface. All other materials are included in tuition.

Study the foundations of pottery. Learn and practice basic hand-building techniques. CREATIVE WOODCARVING - FEE: $150
Learn the exciting and beautiful art of woodcarving under the tutelage of one of this country's master woodcarvers, JR Cadawas. He will teach both beginner and advanced woodcarving students the techniques that have brought him international acclaim. Creative woodcarving, or wood sculpturing, utilizes the traditional gouge and mallet approach. Beginners will choose a floral or picturesque work in deep relief sculpture form. Advanced woodcarvers may specify the form of their choice or consult with the instructor to choose an individualized project. For his artistry in this medium, Cadawas has been awarded numerous blue ribbon/first place and best of show honors in local, national, and international art shows. Use silver, copper, brass and nu gold to produce your own personalized pendants, bracelets, brooches, rings, and earrings. This beginning course in fabricated jewelry design will give you an opportunity to delve into a series of projects created in metal. Prepare for live performances of favorite symphonies, concertos, and overtures by local symphony orchestras. No musical training or literacy is required. Skip Landt, a veteran Old Town School of Folk Music instructor, uses simple teaching methods and a relaxed classroom style. By the time you leave the first class you'll be able to play basic blues songs and jam with your friends. All you need is a 10-hole harmonica in the key of C (the most common type).
