Body and Spirit

New!
A LABYRINTH WALK - FEE: $19
The Labyrinth is an archetype found in all religious traditions in various forms around the world. These singular paths meander inward to a center area, and are used as a tool for personal, psychological and spiritual transformation. Since we cannot see a straight path to our destination, the labyrinth is viewed as a metaphor for our lives. We learn to surrender to the path, allowing our subconscious minds to emerge, trusting that the path will lead us to the center and back out again. Walking a labyrinth can provide a sense of connectedness, peace and happiness by allowing a "time-out" from the stresses of daily life. Some people walk labyrinths to search for a deeper meaning of self while others walk labyrinths to request guidance or help in their lives. We will visit the permanent outdoor labyrinth at St. Gregory's Episcopal Church in Deerfield, which is a replica of the 12th century labyrinth laid into the floor of Chartres Cathedral in France. A labyrinth expert from the church will be our guide. Meet at St. Gregory's, located at Deerfield and Wilmot Roads in Deerfield, 847.945.1678.

SCHOOL SUCCESS:
20/20 VISION IS NOT ENOUGH - FEE: $19
Approximately 80 percent of what children learn is processed through their eyes-but good vision involves more than just clear eyesight. Standard eye charts can't measure important visual skills, like the ability to focus, track a line of print across a page, or process what is seen on a page. Children with poor visual skills may struggle to read, have short attention spans, and low academic and sports performance- despite high aptitude predictions. These visual weaknesses can be treated, reducing visual stress, improving attention, and helping the brain to process information accurately. The instructor is a board-certified developmental optometrist with 35 years in practice and a national reputation. He will discuss the visual skills needed for academic success, and symptoms to look for if your child is struggling.

This parents-only class applies the Sign With Your Baby program, developed by Dr. Joseph Garcia, and based on more than 20 years of research. Dr. Garcia's research shows that babies can learn to communicate using sign language as early as 10 months old, well before the development of vocal capacity to formulate spoken words. This research and methodology will be discussed briefly, and parents will learn basic baby-themed American Sign Language (ASL) signs and handy ways of teaching them to babies. Parents will be able to begin working with their baby immediately. Program registration includes a handout summarizing the information and signs covered in class.

EYES ON CHINA: PAST AND PRESENT - FEE: $69
It seems that China is visible everywhere today-in the news, in the workplace, in every trip to the store. But what do we really know about this country of 1.3 billion people with the world's fastest growing economy? As we enter the 21st century, which some have called the "Chinese Century," an introduction is long overdue. To understand the present and future, we need to appreciate the past. This four-part class will provide an overview of China's history, customs and language, and a snapshot of what is going on in China right now. The instructor, an Oakton faculty member, was born, raised and educated in the People's Republic of China.
