Professional certifications through Oakton's Noncredit Continuing Education Division give an edge when applying for jobs or promotions. They provide proof of abilities and add value to a resume. These classes can also be taken for college credit.


compTIA The CompTIA A+ certification exam provides foundation-level knowledge. CompTIA also offers advanced, vendor-neutral certifications in areas such as security, networking, and home technology.

For the MCSE, Microsoft says: "candidates should have at least one year of experience implementing and administering a network operating system, implementing and administering a client operating system, and designing a network infrastructure."

cisco Cisco's CCNA certification is an introductory-level certification, designed for IT professionals who can "install, configure, and operate LAN, WAN, and dial access services for small networks (100 nodes or fewer)." The CCNA can be used as a starting point for higher level certifications, such as the CCNP (Cisco Certified Network Professional).
