Computer Apps for Business CAB101 - Keyboarding and Document Formatting This course develops competency in keyboarding and document creation through mastery of the electronic keyboard, and in formatting basic business documents including correspondence, reports and tables. Basic equipment functions such as accessing the computer system, formatting, editing, printing, saving and retrieving are taught on a computer terminal. Students will learn to use the keyboard as a writing tool and will develop composing, language arts, proofreading, and editing skills at the computer. Also covered will be formatting a basic letter and report as well as academic writing assignments. 2 Credit Hours (lecture: 2; lab: 2) Fee: $30 CAB104 - Advanced Document Formatting This course offers further development of a marketable skill in keyboarding, speed refinement of keyboarding techniques, formatting a variety of letter styles, tables, and other office forms, and use of word processing on computers. Students will develop a hands-on understanding of the Windows environment and learn how to use both keyboard and mouse to control computer applications, perform file operations efficiently, run multiple applications simultaneously, transfer data between applications, virus check a disk, and do simple troubleshooting 1 Credit Hours (lecture: 1; lab: 1) Fee: $15 CAB120 - Introduction to Microsoft Word for Windows This course will cover basic word processing functions such as entering, formatting, editing, moving, saving, and retrieving text; and proofreading, correcting errors and spell checking. Students cannot receive credit in both CAB 125 and any of CAS 111, CAS 112, CAS 113, CAB 120, CAB 122, or CAB 123.Prerequisite: Hands on experience on a microcomputer and the ability to keyboard 20 wpm or consent of instructor. 1 Credit Hours (lecture: 1; lab: 1) Fee: $15 CAB122 - Intermediate Microsoft Word for Windows This course will cover and will allow the student to learn additional features of the word processing package and applications will be provided to reinforce their use. Topics included are: merge, thesaurus, headers and footers, footnotes/endnotes, hyphenation, tables and math formulas, page numbering, and print previewing. Topics to be covered will include: sort, macros, templates, styles, table of contents, indexes, fonts, charts and columns. This will include taking actual sample exam questions under both an untimed and timed environment. 1 Credit Hours (lecture: 1; lab: 1) Fee: $15 CAB130 - Presentation Software Using PowerPoint This course will introduce you to Microsoft PowerPoint, the program for planning, composing, and creating complete desktop presentations. Covered will be the creation of slides consisting of words, diagrams, pictures, charts, graphs and other images that can be produced on a computer, note pages, and audience handout pages. This software creates graphical diagrams to communicate information that supplements text and numbers within business and technical documents. The course will familiarize the student with the technology of desktop publishing. Practical experience will be gained in producing quality documents such as newsletters, brochures, and flyers suitable for publication.Prerequisite: Ability to keyboard 20 wpm. Practical exercises lead students from the basics of object manipulation including reflecting, shearing and blending through the subtleties of layering and Bezier' curves toward creating professional, computer-based illustrations.Prerequisite: Hands-on microcomputer experience. 3 Credit Hours (lecture: 3; lab: 3) Fee: $45 CAB180 - Automated Office Procedures The student will prepare for the role of the professional office worker in today's job market through the use of an integrated software package. Tools covered include spreadsheets, databases, calendaring, calculator, notepad, clipboard, electronic mail, and scheduling. The Internet will be used to connect the user with commercial databases. Also covered will be records management, electronic techniques, telephone usage and decision making. This course is an overview of telecommunication including electronic mail and the Internet. Emphasis will be placed on telecommunications technology including some hands on work on the Internet and using E-mail. The focus is on learning how to create a comprehensive executive support system. 3 Credit Hours (lecture: 3; lab: 0) CAB225 - Word Processing Publishing and Web Design This is an advanced word processing course that provides instruction and practice in advanced word processing features, essential desktop publishing concepts and procedures using a word processor, and creation of web pages using a word processor. Topics covered include integrating graphic features, document layout and design concepts, typographic refinements, styles, forms creation and web page development. Students will design and create newsletters, business cards, brochures, flyers, letterheads, manuals and web pages. Prerequisite: CAB 125 recommended or consent of instructor. 3 Credit Hours (lecture: 3; lab: 1) Fee: $45 CAB227 - Using word to Create a Web Page This introductory course allows the student to learn how to design and create Web pages using Microsoft Word. Topics covered include how to create and edit Web pages by adding text, color, backgrounds, horizontal lines, bullets, pictures, scrolling text, hyperlinks, and tables. Additional topics include exploring the Internet, displaying Web sites, using different browsers, searching for specific information, downloading images, and converting documents to HTML format.Prerequisite: Basic Proficiency in Microsoft Word. 1 Credit Hours (lecture: 1; lab: 1) Fee: $15 CAB235 - Advanced Spreadsheeting Using Excel This course is a continuation of Electronic Spreadsheeting Using Excel (CAB135). Students will learn advanced Excel techniques using Microsoft Excel, such as interfacing with external data sources using XML, locating and resolving errors using Excel auditing tools, tracking and managing changes, and managing collaboration on workbooks. 1 Credit Hours (lecture: 1; lab: 1) Fee: $15 CAB238 - Excel Expert Certification Preparation Course offers an intensive review of the methods and techniques which should be on the Microsoft Expert Certification Exam for Excel. Prerequisite: Recent completion of CAB 235 or consent of instructor. 1 Credit Hours (lecture: 1; lab: 1) Fee: $15 CAB251 - Computer Applications for Business Internship Course consists of direct work experience in a computer applications-related environment at an approved business or industrial firm applying knowledge and skills learned to their daily assigned responsibilities. The student will meet with a Computer Applications for Business instructor who will evaluate their on-the-job technical skills. Arrangements for the work experience will be made in conjunction with the CAB coordinator. In addition, the student will discuss work-related situations with the instructor.Prerequisite: Completion of a minimum of 15 credits in CIS, CAB, WWW, or CNS with a grade of C or better in each course and consent of instructor, department coordinator, or program chair 3 Credit Hours (lecture: 2; lab: 10) CAB265 - Advanced Desktop Publishing Advanced applications using design decisions, graphics creation, scaling and cropping, and typeface options and manipulations, will challenge the experienced desktop publishing student in this course. Coordination of all the components of the publishing process is emphasized. PhotoShop special effects and filters are incorporated into the projects and features available in PhotoShop for Web site construction are introduced.Prerequisite: CAB 172 recommended or consent of instructor. 3 Credit Hours (lecture: 3; lab: 3) Fee: $45 CAB275 - Advanced Adobe Illustrator This course goes beyond the use of basic Illustrator tools and is designed to expand the use of the tools to create projects common to commercial graphic art production. Topics to be introduced are: an introduction to Color Management, Technical Illustration, Map Making and Charts, Web Images, Point of Purchase, all with an emphasis toward building a portfolio using Adobe Illustrator as a tool.Prerequisite:CAB 175 recommended or consent of instructor. 3 Credit Hours (lecture: 3; lab: 1) Fee: $45 CAB281 - Software for Graphic Design Course will allow the student to operate and learn current illustration and design software packages. Prerequisite:Hands-on computer experience using software that runs in the Windows environment, and CAB 175 recommended with a minimum grade of C. 3 Credit Hours (lecture: 3; lab: 2) Fee: $45 CAB283 - Animation Techniques in desktop publishing The course is structured to give the student an overview of three-dimensional visualization and animation techniques. Via survey of the current software available in the graphics market, the unique features of each package are explored.
