Mechanical Design

MEC105 - Processes and Materials
Covers properties of materials including plastics and composites, ceramics, and metals. Processes discussed include: molding, machining, forming, and joining operations. Non-traditional methods - EDM, stereolithography, abrasive cutting, and others - are presented. Course includes plant tours, guest speakers, and specialized videotape materials.

MEC210 - Computer Integrated Manufacturing
An in-depth overview of hardware, software and procedures involved in computer design and manufacturing. Specific topics considered include: hardware and fundamentals of CAD, programmable controllers, NC programming, robotics technology, computer-aided process planning, inventory management, computer-process interfacing, computer-integrated manufacturing and implementing CAD/CAM systems. Fee $50

MEC220 - Elements of Machine Design
Design of machine elements as affected by material properties, loading conditions, stresses, deformation and cost. Topics include: failure analysis, bearing, shafts and couplings, cams, gears, belts, chains, clutches and brakes, mechanical fasteners and springs.

MEC230 - Static and Strength of Materials
This course treats concepts of statics and strength of materials. Topics considered include forces, force components, moments, couples, friction, equilibrium, trusses, centroids, moments of inertia, stress and strain, stresses in beams, deflection of beams, torsion, riveted, bolted and welded joints. Prerequisite: MAT 120, or MAT 114, or equivalent.
