Math and English Placement Tests are used to determine your appropriate math and English course placement. You cannot fail these tests. Test results are valid for two years.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Why do I have to take placement tests?

Your test results will help you and the college staff work together to choose courses in which you will have the best chance for success.

All math and English course placements made through testing are mandatory. You should be aware that placement may be in a course that will not grant college credit.

When will I need to take the tests?

First, you must apply to the College. Then plan to take your tests at least one week before registration.

Can I be exempt from these tests?

Tests may be waived if you have a degree, 24 credit hours with a 2.0 GPA, or if you have taken math or English courses at another United States college or university.

Bring proof of your college credit to Advising and Counceling Center at either campus, room 1130 DP or room A105 RHC, where a staff member can help you.

Can I use my ACT scores for placement?

If you have ACT results less than 3 years old, you may be able to use them for placement as follows:

(space image) With a score on the ACT English test of 22 or higher, you will be placed in English 101 and are exempt from the Oakton writing placement test.

With a score on the ACT Reading test of 20 or higher, you are exempt from the Oakton reading placement test unless the DRP test is required for a limited enrollment program.

(space image) If you graduated from the Glenbrook, Niles , Northridge Prep, or Maine high schools, contact the math advisor at mathplace@oakton.edu or call 847-376-7110, for the option of direct placement into a math course.
(space image) Official ACT reports must be submitted to the Office of Admissions.

How long will the test take?
The English test consists of both the reading and writing tests. It will take about 2 hours including directions. The math test is untimed, but most students take anywhere from 30 minutes to one hour per test. So, for those of you taking all three tests, plan on spending approximately 3 hours to complete your assessment testing.

What should I bring when I come to take my tests?

You must bring PHOTO IDENTIFICATION such as a current official photo ID issued by a school, employer, or city/state/government agency (such as a driver's license or passport) on which both your name and current photo appear.

You may bring your own pen, pencil and translation dictionary for the writing test.

You must know your Social Security or Oakton I.D. number.

What should I not bring when I come to take my tests?
The Testing Center provides all the test materials you will need, including the calculator that can be used on the math test. Pagers, cellular phones, electronic or printed dictionaries, food, drinks, and children are not permitted in the testing room. Children may not be left unattended on campus.

When will I get my test results?
You will receive your math results immediately after the test. English test results will be available within 3-5 days after the test in the Advising and Counseling Center, room 1130 DP or A105 RHC.

All Oakton placement test results are valid for 2 years.
