Niles North High School won top honors in the annual High School Accounting Contest sponsored by Oakton Community College. Niles North defeated teams from Niles West and Maine South in the advanced [Level II] exam for students enrolled in second year accounting. In a separate competition for first year [Level I] accounting students, Glenbrook South finished ahead of teams from Maine East and Maine South."The High School Accounting Contest gives students a chance to demonstrate their individual knowledge and work together as a team," said Mary Ann Janosik, dean of Social Science and Business. "It's a wonderful collaboration between Oakton and area high schools."
Individual Level II honors went to Wasim Chowdhury (1st Place), Michelle Bonifacio (2nd Place), and Marc Klein (3rd Place), all from Niles North. Individual Level I honors went to Daniel Campnell and Randy Judlink (tie, 1st Place), Dinish Abraham (2nd Place), and Derek Fugate (3rd Place), all from Glenbrook South.
Oakton's annual High School Accounting Contest consists of a two-hour written exam that covers basic accounting practices, balance sheets, profit and loss, and other types of financial statements. More than 70 students took part in the contest and luncheon, which featured the distribution of team and individual trophies and modest cash awards.
Oakton Community College offers degree and certificate curricula for students preparing to earn a bachelor's degree at a four-year college or university, as well as those preparing for employment in a variety of careers. Oakton is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association, Illinois Community College Board and American Association of Community Colleges.
