Caregivers and others who deal with end-of-life issues are invited
to attend "Health Literacy and Pain Management,"
a one-day symposium sponsored by Rainbow Hospice of Park Ridge and
the Alliance for Lifelong Learning at Oakton Community College. The
symposium features a free afternoon teleconference and will be offered
8:15 a.m. - 4 p.m., Wednesday, April 5, at Oakton's Des Plaines campus,
1600 E. Golf Road.
Morning
sessions feature live expert presentations from Rev. Leroy Joesten,
mission and spiritual care vice president, Advocate Lutheran General
Hospital; Patricia Bloom, M.D., medical director, and Gregory Dyke,
R.Ph., director of palliative services, both at Rainbow Hospice. Sessions
will provide information for enhancing communication related to pain
and identifying strategies to minimize the challenges of health literacy
related to pain management.
In
the afternoon session, Frank Sesno, professor of public policy and
communication at George Mason University and CNN correspondent, moderates
the panel, "Pain Management at the End of Life: Bridging the Gap Between
Knowledge and Practice." Presented live via satellite, a group of
experts in the field examines the laws and regulations governing pain
management. The panel will be followed by a 30-minute discussion and
Q&A session.
Registration
fee of $50 includes a box lunch and Continuing Education Credits (morning
session only) for social workers, counselors, registered nurses, and
other professionals. The afternoon teleconference is free to attend,
but registration is required. Continuing education for the teleconference
only will be available for a fee through Hospice Foundation of America.
Box lunches may be reserved for $15 each; a $15 teleconference manual
also is available.
