Social-emotional
learning disorders in children will be covered in a workshop sponsored
by Rush NeuroBehavioral Center, 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Friday, Feb.
29, at Oakton Community College, 1600 E. Golf Road, Des Plaines.
Designed
for parents, teachers, and allied health and medical professionals,
"Practical Strategies to Help Children with Brain-Based Social-Emotional
Challenges," features keynote speaker Emily Rubin, M.S.,
CCC-SLP. Rubin is a speech pathologist specializing in autism, Asperger's
Syndrome, and related social learning disabilities. Her presentation
will focus on ways to address the social and communication needs of
youths facing such conditions, from incorporating styles and prioritizing
objectives to modifying the environment.
Other
presenters include Meryl Lipton, Ph.D., behavioral pediatric neurologist
and executive director of Rush NeuroBehavioral Center, and Clark McKown,
Ph.D., a child clinical psychologist and associate executive director
of Rush NeuroBehavioral Center.
Workshop
topics include evidence regarding the reliability and validity of
social-emotional learning; strategies for assessing children's social-emotional
learning ability; and ways to identify social communication challenges
faced by children and adolescents.
