Philosophy,
cinema, and religion are the focus of October courses offered by the
Emeritus Program at Oakton Community College. All featured classes
meet at Oakton's Ray Hartstein Campus, 7701 N. Lincoln Ave., Skokie.
The
Secret of Buddhist Serenity (PHL E74-61) explores universal
humanistic teachings for everyday life. Learn from a Buddhist minister
how to handle personal challenges and "suffer wisely." Six-week course
meets Monday, 10 - 11:30 a.m., starting Oct. 1. Course fee is $80.
Orson
Welles: Cinema Author Extraordinaire (HUM B40-61) examines
the brilliant career of Orson Welles. Films include Citizen Kane,
The Third Man, Othello, and Touch of Evil.
Ten-week course meets Tuesday, 9:30 a.m. - 12:45 p.m., starting Oct.
2. Course fee is $120.
The
Essential Mystics (PHL E72-61) looks at the world's great
mystical traditions. Course covers Kabbalah, Sufism, Christian mysticism,
and Hindu mystical traditions. Five-week course meets Wednesday, 11
a.m. - 12:30 p.m., starting Oct. 3. Course fee is $70.
The American Religious Experience: An Experiment in Diversity
(HIS B07-61) studies the vitality of religion in America. Eight-week
course meets Thursday, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m., starting Oct. 4. Course
fee is $110.
Thumbs
Up, Thumbs Down (HUM E74-61) allows students to critique
the latest movies. Six-week course meets Friday, 1 - 3 p.m., starting
Oct. 5. Course fee is $75.
