Oakton Emeritus Courses Examine History of Culture

Learn about the history of religion, art, and music by enrolling in classes offered through Oakton Community College's Emeritus Program. All featured courses meet at Oakton's Ray Hartstein Campus, 7701 N. Lincoln Ave., Skokie.

Paganism in Western Culture (PHL E60-61) examines how paganism - even to this day - has shaped Western theologies and philosophies. Ten-week class meets Fridays, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m., starting Sept. 23. Course fee is $110.

Story of American Art (ART C82-61) provides insight into art that reflects our nation, including the works of colonial painters, American impressionists, and regionalists. One-week course meets Wednesday, 1 - 2:30 p.m., Sept. 28. Course fee is $20.

American Music: Songs of the People (MUS C20-61) looks at the history of 20th century American music, with a special focus on banjo music, Irish folk songs, African rhythms, and protest songs. Join presenters Michael Miles, Kathy Cowan, Lenny Marsh, and Mark Dvorak, all of whom are affiliated with Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music. Four-week course meets Wednesdays, 10 - 11:15 a.m., starting Oct. 5. Course fee is $30.

Oakton's Emeritus Program offers credit and noncredit courses, lectures, seminars, and tours, while providing a chance to share learning experiences with peers age 50 and over.
