Oakton Emeritus Presents 'People and Places' Series

Gain a better understanding of different cultures by enrolling in the People and Places lecture series offered by Oakton Community College's Emeritus Program. The four-week series meets 1 - 2:15 p.m., Wednesdays, starting July 27, at the Ray Hartstein Campus, 7701 N. Lincoln Ave., Skokie.

The series begins with Antoni Gaudi and Barcelona, an examination of the work of the Spanish architect who designed the Temple of the Sagrada Familia. Women and Modern Art in Latin America features the works of important 20th century Latina artists including Tarsila do Amaral (Brazil), Lygia Clark (Brazil), Frida Kahlo (Mexico), and Doris Salcedo (Colombia). A Century of Chicago Art surveys Chicago's art, architecture, gardens, and literature over the last 100 years. The series concludes with Myanmar (Formerly Known as Burma), an in-depth look at village life in Myanmar, a country that borders India and China.

In-district residents age 60 and older pay $20 for the lecture series; those who live out-of-district or who are under 60 pay $25.

Oakton's Emeritus Program offers credit and noncredit courses, lectures, seminars, and tours, while providing a chance to share learning experiences with peers age 50 and over.
