Enjoy
two distinctive musical series featuring renowned performers, presented
by the Emeritus Program at Oakton Community College. Both series meet
at Oakton's Ray Hartstein Campus, 7701 N. Lincoln Ave., Skokie.
Troubadours:
Musical Missionaries (MUS B50-71) features three talented
troubadours from Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music. Three-week
series meets Wednesdays, 10 - 11:15 a.m., starting April 11. The series
cost is $40, or $15 per individual presentation.
The
series begins with Mark Dvorak, one of the nation's
favorite traveling folk singers. His songs and stories are guaranteed
to make you smile. On April 18, the series continues with Michael
Miles, considered one of the country's finest banjo players
and an inspiration to folk legend Pete Seeger. The series concludes
April 25 with Chris Walz, a master of the piano and
the National steel guitar, who provides classic examples of various
American song styles.
Music
Without Borders (MUS B53-71) features a celebration of international
music from all over the globe. Three-week series meets Sundays, 2:15
- 3:30 p.m., starting April 15. The series cost is $40, or $15 per
individual presentation.
The
series begins April 15 with Music of West Africa,
featuring Michael Taylor's Holy Goat Percussion ensemble. The program
continues April 22 with Chicago Spelenshlag, an accomplished
"gang of musicians playing folk music from Scandinavia." The series
concludes April 29, with Inti Ramyi performaning
music from the Andes, Bolivia, Cuba, and Venezuela.
