Oakton Community College students Muzammil Ali of Des Plaines and Joe Giannini of Glenview placed first and second, respectively, in the Suburban Chicago Intercollegiate Catapult Contest at the College of DuPage.
Engineering students from Oakton, McHenry County College, College of DuPage, and College of Lake County took part in the inaugural competition on May 8. Students designed and built catapults to compete in the categories of distance, accuracy, and precision. Additional members of the Oakton team included Matt Beals, Des Plaines; Tyler DeRoo, Barrington; Adrian Gaytan and Jeff Kaplan, Skokie; and Alejandro Perez, Wilmette.
“This competition provided a wonderful opportunity for our students and faculty to interact both socially and academically while solving real engineering problems,” said advisor Joe Kotowski, chair of engineering and professor of mechanical design and mathematics.
