Oakton
Community College volunteer Ann Grant was recently
honored by the Volunteer Center of Northwest Suburban Chicago for
her service in education.
The Skokie resident was presented with the organization's Caring Hearts
Outstanding Volunteer in Education Award at the recognition banquet
Tuesday, March 18, in Mount Prospect. For the past 13 years Grant
has been a tutor for Oakton's Volunteers in Teaching Adults (VITA),
assisting adults to improve their English speaking, reading, and writing
skills.
"Ann has worked with over 150 ESL students who face cultural and language
barriers and her understanding and sensitivity to students from different
cultures has been invaluable in helping them achieve their educational
and professional goals," Volunteer Center of Northwest Suburban Chicago
officials said.
Located
in Arlington Heights and established in 1969, the Volunteer Center
of Northwest Suburban Chicago initiates, leads, supports, and promotes
programs through its partnerships with more than 140 social services,
schools, and businesses.
Each
semester, Oakton offers free English as a Second Language (ESL) classes
to approximately 3,000 adults whose native language is not English.
