Cruise the 'Last Continent' on Oakton Tour
Slice through the ice passages of Antarctica on an educational tour offered through Oakton Community College's travel/study program. Trips for 2003-2004 are scheduled for November through March. Tours vary in length from nine to 19 nights, depending on the selected departure date.As the Russian vessel, Akademik Ioffe, transports travelers through the icy waters of Antarctica, the expedition leader will maximize the educational adventure while balancing weather and safety issues. Spectacular views and excellent wildlife promise visual delight as the trip stops at research stations such as Pleneau Island, Port Lockroy, and Paradise Bay. Travelers may opt to camp overnight "on the ice" (equipment provided and included in the basic fee).
The tour also includes a variety of educational lectures including "Antarctic Ecosystems," "Seabirds: Ocean Wanderers," "Polar Madness: Race for the Poles," and "Triumph and Tragedy: Poles Achieved." A kayaking excursion also is offered for an additional charge.
Specific tour itineraries are adjusted based on daily weather and ice conditions. For costs, accommodation options, and more information, call Bea Cornelissen at 847-635-1812.
