The
Skyway Conference has honored 10 Oakton Community College students
as Academic Athlete of the Year. To earn the award, students must
have completed 48 credit hours with a 3.00 GPA or higher over their
college career.
Four
players from Oakton's baseball team were named Academic Athletes of
the Year: sophomore Joe Szczudlo (Maine South High School), sophomore
Michael Wieda (Hersey High School), sophomore Jeff Wertepny (Maine
South High School), and sophomore John McGowan (Schaumburg High School).
Also
honored at Oakton were freshman volleyball player Anna Domenick (New
Trier High School), freshman basketball player Lee Gross (Niles West
High School), freshman women's cross country runner Stephanie Ng (Niles
North High School), men's soccer player Jordan Luckey (Streator Township
High School), and sophomore women's soccer players Andrea Myrick (Arizona
High School), and Grace Jops (Stephen Mather High School).
Founded
in 1969, the Skyway Conference consists of eight member colleges competing
for athletic championships in a dozen sports. College of Lake County,
Elgin Community College, McHenry Community College, Moraine Valley
Community College, Morton College, Prairie State College, and Waubonsee
Community College also are members of the conference.
