Two pitchers from Oakton Community College's record team (44-11) last spring have advanced to the professional level.Alex Morales recently was promoted to the Florida State League, bypassing the Short Season A and Low A minor league levels. Morales compiled one save and eight strikeouts in five and one-third innings for the Brevard County Manatees, a Montreal Expos affiliate.
The right-hander from Hersey High School in Arlington Heights also was 1-1 for the Jupiter Expos in the rookie-level Gulf Coast League, maintaining a 0.90 ERA in six games while recording 10 strikeouts in 10 innings. Last season for Oakton, Morales sported a 5-0 record along with a 1.71 ERA while striking out 60 batters in 40 innings.
Meanwhile, Morales' Oakton teammate, Julio Medina, recently signed with the Cincinnati Reds' farm system. Medina ended his summer with a 2-2 record with two saves for the Reds in the rookie-level Gulf Coast League. Medina, a right hand pitcher from Elk Grove High School, struck out 27 batters in 12 games, and also played in four games for the Reds' Pioneer League team, the Billings Mustangs. Medina sported a 2.24 ERA and a 10-3 record for the Raiders last season, earning 77 strikeouts in 73 and one-third innings.
Last spring, Medina and Morales helped Oakton to a 44-11 season, the team's best record in history. Oakton went on to win the Skyway Conference Tournament, where Morales no-hit McHenry County College while striking out 18 batters.
