Big hair
and big laughs are guaranteed as the Chicago Bar Association brings
its 80th annual "Christmas Spirits" revue to Oakton Community College
on Saturday, Jan. 31. A portion of the proceeds are used to support
the Charles N. Goodnow Chicago Bar Association Scholarship at Oakton
Community College.
In this
year's original production, "Hearsay" (a play on the Broadway hit,
"Hairspray"), Chicago's best legal minds skewer a variety of overexposed
celebrities and news events, from Martha Stewart and "American Idol,"
to President George Bush and the California recall election. The new
smoking ban in Skokie is lampooned in "Second-Hand Smoke," a takeoff
on the Barbra Streisand classic, "Second Hand Rose," and last spring's
Glenbrook North High School hazing controversy is targeted through
a parody of Cindy Lauper's "Girls Just Want to Have Fun." Featured
are performances by local residents Bob Canel of Skokie (as Mayor
Daley), Cliff Berman of Lincolnwood (as Secretary of Defense Donald
Rumsfeld), Nathan G. Brenner Jr. of Morton Grove (as Bush advisor
Karl Rove), and Joseph LaGioia Jr. of Niles.
The
show begins at 8:30 p.m. in the Footlik Theater at Oakton's Des Plaines
campus, 1600 E. Golf Road. A reception follows the performance. This
event is hosted by Oakton's Educational Foundation, with proceeds
benefiting student scholarships. Reserved seats are $50. To order
tickets, call the Office of Resource Development at 847-635-1893.
