The Oakton Community College Board of Trustees has named Donald E.
Barshis, Ph.D., to fill the vacancy left by the Nov. 28, 2005 death
of trustee J. William Handzel. Barshis' appointment was made at the
Dec. 13 Board of Trustees meeting, for a term that expires in April
2007.
An
educator with more than 30 years of community college experience,
Barshis served as professor of English and executive dean of instruction
at Wilbur Wright College. He also managed transfer, career, and developmental
studies programs and developed new curriculum in nursing, gerontology,
psychiatric rehabilitation, and Great Book studies at Wilbur Wright.
Barshis also has taught at Harold Washington College, and served as
executive director of the City Colleges of Chicago's Center for the
Improvement of Teaching and Learning.
Barshis
earned a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, a master's degree from
the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a bachelor's degree from
DePaul University.
Barshis
previously served on Oakton's board from May 2003 through April 2005,
filling a vacancy left by the death of trustee Majorie Whitman. He
and his wife Jan live in Wilmette.
