The
nationally ranked Oakton Community College baseball team defends its
NJCAA Region IV Sectional Championship starting at 5 p.m., Saturday,
March 12, as the Raiders open the 2005 season against Delaware Valley
College in Ft. Pierce, Florida. The team will play a 13-game schedule
in the sunshine state through March 17.
With
33 victories in 2004, Oakton finished third in the NJCAA Region IV
Finals - the highest achievement of any baseball team in College history.
Head coach Mike Pinto guided the Raiders to the NJCAA Region IV Sectional
Championship for the second year in a row and was named Community
College Coach of the Year by the Chicago Pitch and Hit Club.
In
the NJCAA Division II Baseball Preseason Poll, the Raiders are ranked
in the top 35 and Oakton plays 22 games against nationally ranked
teams this season. "That will be a true test of our character," said
Pinto, who has a 74-28 record in his first two years at Oakton. "We
have speed, contact hitters throughout the lineup, and a deep pitching
staff."
Oakton
makes its 2005 home debut in a doubleheader against Madison Area Tech
starting at 3 p.m., Thursday, March 31. Complete team schedules are
