Explore
the natural history, heritage, and cultural diversity of Belize on
a tour offered through the Oakton Community College travel/study program.
The last tour for 2007 departs March 3.
Located
in northeastern Central America, Belize is home to more than 600 archeological
sites, and forests teeming with wildlife. Highlights include visits
to Altun Ha, where a famous jade carving of the Mayan sun god, Kinich
Ahau, was discovered in 1968; South Water Caye, a private barrier
reef island; and Caracol, one of the great cities of Mayan civilization.
Travelers
also have a chance to observe unusual species of birds and butterflies
at the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Preserve, and learn about the curative
powers of native plants at the Ix Chel Farm and Tropical Research
Center. An optional, two-day extension to see the Mayan ruins at Tikal
National Park on the Guatemalan border also is available.
Throughout
the trip participants will sample native dishes and learn about the
everyday lives and customs of the local people through sample lectures.
