Genius inspired by adversity is at the core of Oakton Community College's
2006 Bluestem Festival
of the Arts and Humanities. Eight great events are scheduled
June 5 - 8 at the Ray Hartstein Campus, 7701 N. Lincoln Ave., Skokie.
The
theme of this year's Bluestem Festival, "Come Rain or Come
Shine," celebrates the vision of people motivated by hardship.
Programs include:
"Icarus:
A Modern Look at an Ancient Myth" looks at how this cautionary
tale has evolved at the hands of modern poets and artists (Monday,
June 5, 1 - 2:30 p.m.);
"Curie
and Franklin: Two Rays" compares and contrasts the lives
of Marie Curie and Rosalind Franklin, and their vital contributions
to society (Tuesday, June 6, 1 - 2:30 p.m.);
"Come
Rain or Come Shine: 'The Postman'" presents the acclaimed
1995 film Il Postino (The Postman), which was nominated for
five Academy Awards. Inspired by real events, Il Postino
tells the story of an Italian fisherman whose life changes dramatically
after he begins delivering letters to a famous exiled poet (Wednesday,
June 7, 10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.); and
"The
Bayou and the Blues" looks at how early jazz and Bayou blues
developed under French, Creole, and Caribbean influences (Thursday,
June 8, 10 - 11:30 a.m.).
The
fee for the entire Bluestem Festival series is $45; individual lectures
are $10 each. The complete program schedule may be found at www.oakton.edu/bluestem.
