Chicago
area artists, potters, and school art departments are invited to contribute
their time and talent to the first-ever "Empty Bowls at Oakton" fundraiser,
Saturday, Dec. 4, 7 a.m. - 4 p.m. This event, sponsored by the Ceramics
Club at Oakton Community College, is designed to raise awareness and
funds for global hunger issues.
Pledge
forms are now available for anyone interested in making ceramic bowls
to be sold at the event. Bowls should be approximately six inches
in diameter, three to four inches deep, and able to hold 12 to16 ounces
of soup. Potters are required to use certified food safe glazes; no
leaded glazes will be permitted. No coiled bowls, please.
The
Ceramics Club has set a goal of collecting 1,000 bowls for the fundraiser,
during which supporters will purchase a bowl, and be served a simple
meal of soup and bread as a reminder of world hunger. All proceeds
will benefit selected Chicago area food charities.
The "Empty
Bowls" concept was born 14 years ago, when a Michigan high school
art teacher teamed up with a group of students to support a local
food drive. Their idea has since been used to raise millions of dollars
for food banks, soup kitchens, and other meal programs.
Pledge
form requests may be sent to emptybowls@oakton.edu, or call 847-635-1699.
