Best-selling
author Michael Thompson is the presenter for "Engage
Me! Helping Boys Succeed in School," a conference to explore the growing
gender gap in education, sponsored by Oakton Community College. The
conference is scheduled 8:30 a.m. - 3 p.m., Friday, March 28, at Oakton's
Des Plaines campus, 1600 E. Golf Road.
Designed
for school administrators, counselors, faculty, social workers, and
students, the conference will address the top reasons for boys' underachievement
from a psychological point of view and offer solutions for addressing
academic disengagement by boys. Participating schools are encouraged
to send multiple representatives to Thompson's workshop.
"We need a team approach to this critical issue," says Greg Baldauf,
professor of psychology and student development. "Violent outbreaks
on campus represent only the most extreme consequences of continuing
to ignore academic underachievement by boys."
The
cost of the full-day workshop is $150 for the first participant from
each school, and $50 for each additional team member (limit five).
The fee includes a box lunch and, for the team leader, a copy of Thompson's
book, Raising Cain: Protecting the Emotional Life of Boys.
The workshop also may qualify some participants for CEUs or service
learning credits.
