JOURNEY TO CHINA WITH OAKTON'S TRAVEL/STUDY PROGRAM

Take a "Confucian odyssey" to China with Oakton Community College's travel/study program. Two trips are scheduled for 2002: September 23 - Oct. 9 and Oct. 14 - 30.

The adventure begins in Beijing, China's second-largest city and its capital for 700 years. You'll visit Tian An Men plaza, where the first flag of the People's Republic of China was raised in 1949, and the Palace Museum, also known as the Forbidden City. Representatives from the China Population Information and Research Center will give a lecture on China's "One Child Policy." Next, you'll journey to the 2,000-year-old Great Wall of China and follow it along the "Sacred Way" road to the Ming Tombs.

Other stopping points on your tour include Xian, the archaeological excavation of the life-sized Terra Cotta Warriors; Qufu, the birthplace of Confucius; Tai'an, site of the famous Dai Temple, where 2,200 years ago the first emperor of China held sacrificial ceremonies; and Suzhou, known as the Venice of the East, where you will enjoy a Grand Canal cruise. Throughout your travels, you'll sample native dishes at specially arranged meals and learn about the everyday lives and customs of the local people.
