Oakton Professor Wins Distinguished Woman Award

Constance Churchill, Ph.D., of Buffalo Grove, a professor of chemistry at Oakton Community College, is the inaugural recipient of the “Award of Distinction” from the Oakton chapter of the American Association of Women in Community Colleges (AAWCC). The Oakton chapter was officially installed at a luncheon May 1.

The Award of Distinction is presented to an Oakton staff or faculty member who has made significant contributions to the advancement of women, students and the community.

“Connie provides a strong model for all of us,” said Karen Epps, manager of budget and financial analysis, who presented the award. “She is a pioneering and independent spirit.”

Churchill is credited with originating the annual College program known as Futures Unlimited, which introduces junior high school girls to careers in science, technology and math. Churchill also is co-chair of the Green College Committee, and served as dean of the formerly-named Division of Science and Allied Health. With more than 40 years in academia, Churchill has taught and served as an administrator at Dakota State College in Madison, South Dakota, and Burlington County College in Pemberton, New Jersey. Churchill has a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and a doctorate degree in organic chemistry from Baylor University.

Outside of the classroom, Churchill is an active community member who volunteers at a nursing home and as an adult religious education teacher.

The AAWCC is a national organization dedicated to changing women’s lives through leadership and education.
