More than 200 prospective graduates will participate in Oakton Community College's commencement ceremonies on May 15. Oakton President Margaret Lee will confer degrees and certificates beginning at 7 p.m. in the TenHoeve Center at the Des Plaines campus, 1600 E. Golf Rd.
Sarah Ann Long, director of the North Suburban Library System (NSLS), will deliver this year's commencement address. During her tenure, Long has pioneered Internet access in all NSLS libraries, and established the North Suburban Library Foundation, an independent organization that sponsors the Literary Circle lecture series. She also served from 1999 to 2000 as president of the American Library Association, where she fostered relationships between U.S. libraries and libraries around the world.
Distinguished Alumni Awards will be presented to Park Ridge residents Howard and Ann Tennes, who met while attending the College in 1982. After graduating from Oakton, Howard earned a bachelor's degree from Northeastern Illinois University and his juris doctor degree from DePaul University's College of Law in 1986. He currently serves as executive vice president of a subsidiary of RBC Mortgage Company and is a member of Oakton's Board of Trustees.
Ann Tennes transferred from Oakton to Columbia College, where she earned her bachelor's degree in 1985. She later received a master's degree in public administration from Roosevelt University. She is currently the marketing director for the Village of Skokie, and serves on the Park Ridge Zoning Board of Appeals and the Park Ridge Uptown Advisory Task Force.
Only guests holding tickets will be seated at the ceremony in the TenHoeve Center. However, a live broadcast will be televised to an on-campus viewing area for those guests who do not have tickets. Viewing-area guests may join the graduates at the reception immediately following the ceremony.
