Oakton Community College has won an award for innovative teaching in the 2002 Exemplary Initiatives Awards Competition sponsored by the National Council of Instructional Administrators' (NCIA). The award will be presented on Sunday, April 6, in Dallas, Texas.The "Oakton Conference for Teaching Excellence" was honored for its efforts to improve student success through faculty development and new educational approaches. Held last August, the half-day program consisted of 25 presentations by faculty, staff, and administrators. Topics included assessment, critical thinking, classroom and learning strategies, interdisciplinary teaching, teaching with technology, online teaching, and student support.
"The success of the conference is an outstanding example of team effort, faculty enthusiasm, volunteer dedication, and professionalism," said Tingxiu Wang, Ph.D., professor of mathematics, who initiated the conference.
Along with Wang, the conference was organized by program committee members John Carzoli, Ph.D., assistant professor of physics; Kitty Tabers, Ph.D., professor of computer technologies and information systems; Amy Zumfelde, assistant professor of humanities; and Alan Rubin, professor emeritus of psychology and chair of the committee.
As an affiliate of the American Association of Community Colleges, the NCIA annually recognizes community colleges across the country for their leadership and development in five areas of education: teaching and learning, education and technology, general education, assessment and evaluation, and workforce development.
