Celebrate
Constitution Day 2005 at Oakton Community College, 1600 E. Golf Road,
Des Plaines.
On
Friday, Sept. 16, 11 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., in the TenHoeve Center (Room
1606), Oakton will host a satellite broadcast featuring Supreme Court
Justices Sandra Day O'Connor and Stephen Breyer, plus
a special video edition of National Public Radio's "Justice Talking"
program. Admission and parking (Lot D is recommended) are free.
In
the first 90-minute program, starting at 11 a.m., O'Connor and Breyer
talk about the Constitution with high school students at the Supreme
Court. Topics include why we have and need a Constitution; the concept
of federalism; definitions of implicit and explicit rights; and how
separation of powers monitors the influence of each branch of government.
At 12:30 p.m., NPR's Margot Adler hosts an hour-long debate, "Free
Speech in the Digital Age," with Lawrence Lessig, professor of law
at Stanford University; First Amendment attorney Floyd Abrams; and
Jack Valenti, former president and CEO of the Motion Picture Association
of America. Topics include censorship of libraries, textbooks, and
the Internet.
The
program with Justices O'Connor and Breyer will be repeated at 2 p.m.
The
broadcast is sponsored by NPR's "Justice Talking," in cooperation
with the National Archives and Records Administration, the New
York Times Knowledge Network, American Association of State Colleges
and Universities, and other partners, including support from the Annenberg
Foundation Trust at Sunnylands and the Foundation for the National
