Cultural Understanding Focus of New Oakton Course

Cultural sensitivity, ethical issues, and improved listening and critical thinking skills are among the topics covered in a new course being offered at Oakton Community College. "Interpersonal Communications Across Cultures" [SPE 115, Tues., Thurs., 11 a.m. - 12:15 p.m., Des Plaines campus], will focus on respect and understanding across cultures, and how to communicate that understanding, according to Prof. Toni Rowitz.

Class participants will study communication as action, interaction, and transaction, as well as conflict resolution and power in relationships. Other activities will look at the cultural similarities and differences that exist across a wide spectrum of behavior, from control and the acquisition of knowledge or skills, to helping others and engaging in leisure activity.

For more information, contact Prof. Rowitz at 847-635-1964, or tonirow@oakton.edu.

Spring 2004 classes begin January 20; for a complete list of classes consult Oakton's Credit and Noncredit Class Schedule. Eligible students may register online at webreg.oakton.edu, or via Touch-Tone at 847-635-1616. In-person registration is Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 8 p.m. at the Des Plaines campus, 1600 E. Golf Road, and at the Ray Hartstein Campus, 7701 N. Lincoln Ave., Skokie.
