Men who embrace their status as "stay-at-home" dads will explore their creativity and talents at the Seventh Annual At-Home Dads Convention on Saturday, Nov. 23, at Oakton Community College, 1600 E. Golf Road."Every father who stays home to take care of young children comes into their situation with unique expectations and challenges," says event organizer Robert Frank, Ph.D., assistant professor of psychology at Oakton. "This conference offers support for new at-home dads, as well as those who are veterans of nontraditional parenting."
Keynote speakers for the At-Home Dads convention include Marshall Cook, an instructor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Carlos Alden, host of Spokane Public Radio's "The Nacho Celtic Hour." Cook's morning address will focus on "Freeing Your Parenting Creativity," and Alden's afternoon session is entitled "Songs in the Key of Life: A VH1 Storytellers Approach to Identifying and Nourishing Talent." Each keynote is followed by a series of interactive "playshops" designed to enhance participants' parenting skills.
The At-Home Dads convention encourages full-time fathers to network and understand that they are part of a nationwide movement being pursued by more than two million men. Scheduled speakers include Libby Gill, author of Stay-At-Home Dads: The Essential Guide to Creating the New Family; Steve Klem, host of AOL's "Dad Chat"; Peter Baylies, founder of the At-Home Dad Newsletter; and Bill Laut, co-author of Raising Multiple Birth Children. Program details are available on the Web at www.oakton.edu/news/colrel/spevents.htm.
Registration for Oakton's At-Home Dads Convention is $50 before October 26 ($70 after October 26). Participants who also wish to attend Oakton's Men's Day Conference, scheduled on the following day, Sunday, Nov.24, may register for both events for $70.
The Doubletree Guest Suites, located at 1400 Milwaukee Avenue in Glenview, is the official hotel of the convention. For special rates and reservations, call 847-803-9800.
