Oakton's board of trustees voted recently to appoint Mary Ann Janosik, Ph.D., to dean of the Social Science and Business division, and Joianne L. Smith, Ph.D., to dean of students. Both appointments take effect July 1.Janosik, a resident of Cleveland, Ohio, brings extensive teaching experience to Oakton from various colleges around the Midwest, including Lake Erie College, Cuyahoga Community College, and Cleveland State University. Her administrative experience includes positions as program director of the Global Health and Learning Institute, co-chair of the North Central Association Self-Study, and most recently as director of education at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She received her Ph.D. in history from Case Western Reserve University. Janosik replaces Diane Davis, who served as interim dean since January of this year.
Smith, an Evanston resident, has more than 10 years of experience in the field of counseling psychology. She is currently the assistant director of university residential life at Northwestern University, and has worked in similar capacities for Middlebury College, the University of Rochester, and Virginia Commonwealth University, where she earned her Ph.D. in counseling psychology. In addition, she has held a number of clinical positions outside the field of higher education. Smith will replace Kipp Hassell, who was appointed vice president of student affairs last fall.
Janosik and Smith were selected in May as the administration's candidates of choice following a lengthy national search and rigorous interview process.
