OAKTON PLANS WEEK OF SPECIAL EVENTS TO CELEBRATE DIVERSITY IN COMMUNITY


More than 60 events, including seminars, art exhibits, and an international marketplace will highlight Oakton Celebrates Cultures Week, the college's annual festival that pays tribute to cultural diversity in the community. Events are scheduled from March 4 - 8 at Oakton's Des Plaines campus (DPC), 1600 E. Golf Road, and at the Ray Hartstein Campus (RHC), 7701 N. Lincoln Avenue, Skokie. All activities are free and open to the public.

A sampling of the program reflects the variety of events planned and the richness of the cultures they celebrate. The Source, an exhibit of photographs by Hanan Isachar, will be displayed outside the entrance to the Oakton Bookstore on the Ray Hartstein campus, beginning March 4. The exhibit focuses on the mosques, churches and synagogues of Jerusalem and surrounding areas, as well as the natural beauty of the region.

Teach-ins, which provide opportunities to observe students in class as they discuss historical and contemporary issues, are scheduled throughout the week. These include, among others, "The Ancient Maya," from 11 a.m. - 12:15 p.m., March 5, in Room 2609, DPC; "The Eternal Seed," from 9 - 11 a.m. on March 7, in Room 2735, DPC; "Iraq — History, Culture, People, and Politics" from 12:30 - 1:45 p.m. on March 5, in Room 1506, DPC; "Buddhism" from 9:30 - 10:45 a.m., March 7, in Room C214, (RHC).

Other special programs and demonstrations scheduled throughout the week include:
• A conversation about journalism and culture with WBEZ's Shirely Jihad is scheduled for 1 - 2 p.m., March 4, in Room 1608, DPC.
• A seminar on helping children develop anti-bias attitudes in a biased world is scheduled for 7 - 8:30 p.m., March 5, in Room 1610, DPC.
• A Salsa demonstration and dance lesson will be given from 12 - 1:30 p.m., March 4, in the RHC Cafeteria.
• A discussion of various cultural traditions in healing strategies is scheduled for 9:30 - 10:45 a.m., March 7, in RoomA145, RHC.

In addition, ethnic foods will be served in the Des Plaines Cafeteria from Monday through Friday, and at the Ray Hartstein Campus Cafeteria from Monday through Thursday. An International Marketplace will feature merchandise from around the world for sale by Chicago-area vendors and displays by a variety of student clubs and organizations. Hours are 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. on Monday, March 4, at the Des Plaines campus and from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5, at the Ray Hartstein Campus.
