Oakton
Community College's Early Childhood Education Centers earned accreditation
from the National Association for the Education of Young Children
(NAEYC), the nation's premier organization for early childhood professionals,
College officials announced. The centers at the Des Plaines campus,
1600 E. Golf Road, and Skokie campus, 7701 N. Lincoln Ave. are accredited
until 2012.
"We
are very proud of our ECE faculty and staff," says Brad Wooten, dean
of social sciences and business. "They are a dedicated and passionate
team who ensure that Oakton operates a high-quality program every
day. Accreditation lets the community know that children in our programs
are receiving the best possible care and early learning experiences."
Accredited
programs must meet 10 standards of excellence, including: promoting
positive relationships for all children and adults to encourage a
child's sense of individual worth; implementing a curriculum that
fosters all areas of child development; using effective teaching approaches;
providing ongoing learning assessments; promoting nutrition and health;
providing a safe and healthy physical environment; and establishing
community relationships.
A
center receives accreditation by passing 80 percent of the standards
established by the NAEYC. Oakton's Skokie ECE Center passed with a
rate of 97 percent; the Des Plaines facility received a passing rate
of 92 percent.
Oakton's
ECE Centers serve more than 100 families each month, providing full-
and part-day care for children ages 2 to 5. For more information,
