From the quest for meaningful relationships to the detailed analysis of contemporary literature, Oakton's Emeritus Program offers three new courses in the literary arts. All classes meet at the Ray Hartstein Campus, 7701 N. Lincoln Ave., Skokie.Join Karol Verson as she reviews Mamet, McNally, and Margulies: Masters of Modern Malaise (HUM E92-61, Touch-Tone 04743). This new class explores the visions of these three playwrights and discusses how their voices resonate through their work. This six-week class meets from 1 to 4 p.m. Monday, beginning Oct. 7. The course fee is $70.
Another new class, The New Yorker (HUM E93-61, Touch-Tone 04837), is a peer-led group, coordinated by Joyce Robbins and Mandel Gomberg, that generates weekly discussion on student-selected literary pieces from The New Yorker magazine. This six-week class meets from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Mondays, beginning Sept. 23. The course fee is $50. A subscription to The New Yorker also is required; a student subscription from Sept. through Nov. is available for an additional $7.50.
Oprah Winfrey's Book Club (E10-61, Touch-Tone 04735) brings the celebrity's famous book club into the classroom where students will read and discuss her most controversial choices with Beverly Friend, Ph.D. This six-week class meets from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Mondays, beginning Oct. 7. The course fee is $70.
An old favorite, Four Plays (E96-61, Touch-Tone 04758), examines four of the hottest plays to hit the stages of Chicago and New York. This four-week class meets from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursdays, beginning Oct. 17. The course fee is $60.
Students age 60 and above who reside within Oakton's district pay half-tuition for Emeritus noncredit classes. People who have registered for ALL classes within the last five years, or for a credit course in the last three years and have a Social Security number on file may register using the Touch-Tone system by dialing (847) 635-1616. Touch-Tone registration requires payment using a major credit card (Visa, MasterCard, or Discover).
