Several award-winning international films will be presented March
6 - 10 during the Modern Language Film Fest at Oakton
Community College. Free screenings, open to the public, are scheduled
at both Oakton campuses, 1600 E. Golf Road, Des Plaines, and 7701
N. Lincoln Avenue, Skokie.
Films
were selected for their artistic merit, as well as to showcase the
11 modern languages taught at Oakton. All films are presented in the
original language with English subtitles. These films are unrated
by the Motion Picture Association of America and may be appropriate
for mature audiences only. This year's titles include:
Nina's Tragedy (Hebrew, 2005), winner
of 11 Israeli Academy Awards, takes a comedic look at a teen's infatuation
with his beautiful aunt.
Downfall
(German, 2004), dramatizes the last days of Adolf
Hitler, and was nominated for a 2004 Academy Award for Best Foreign
Film.
To Be and to Have (French, 2002), the
highest grossing documentary in French history, features a dedicated
teacher in a rural one-room schoolhouse.
Other
films scheduled include: Rana's Wedding
(Arabic, 2002), To Live (Chinese, 1994),
Caterina in the Big City (Italian, 2003),
Nobody Knows (Japanese, 2004), Little
Monk (Korean, 2003), Vinci
(Polish, 2003), The New Year Romance (Russian,
2004), and The Motorcycle Diaries (Spanish,
2004).
The
film fest is part of Oakton
Celebrates Cultures Week, which features more than 60
programs observing the many diverse cultures in the community, and
also includes Women's
Day, which explores the creative spirit of women.
