La
Vie en Rose, winner of two 2008 Academy Awards, headlines the
Modern Language Film Festival at Oakton Community
College. Free public screenings are scheduled at both Oakton campuses,
1600 E. Golf Road, Des Plaines, and 7701 N. Lincoln Avenue, Skokie,
March 31 - April 4.
All
films are presented in the original language with English subtitles.
This year's selections include:
La
Vie en Rose (French, 2007) is highlighted by Marion
Cotillard's Oscar-winning performance as legendary French songstress
Edith Piaf.
Pan's
Labyrinth (Spanish, 2006) is Guillermo Del Torro's critically-acclaimed
fantasy set in 1944 fascist Spain. The film won three Academy Awards
in 2007.
The
Lives of Others (German, 2006), winner of the 2007 Academy
Award for Best Foreign Language Film, depicts life under East Germany's
secret police agency.
Other scheduled films include: Halfouine: Boy of the Terrace
(Arabic, 1995), Rhapsody of Spring (Chinese,
1998), Three Mothers (Hebrew, 2006), The
Tiger and the Snow (Italian, 2006), Hula
Girls (Japanese, 2006), Beyond the Years
(Korean, 2007), Just Love Me (Polish, 2006),
and The Italian (Russian, 2005).
These
films are unrated by the Motion Picture Association of America and
may be appropriate for mature audiences only. The film fest is part
of Oakton Celebrates Cultures Week, which features
more than 60 diverse performances, lectures, and demonstrations.
