Oakton Gallery Hosts Musical Artistry

Poetry meets music in a suite of new chamber music compositions to be premiered Oct. 9 and 10, at Koehnline Gallery on the Des Plaines campus of Oakton Community College, 1600 E. Golf Road.

"A Whitman Sampler," featuring Oakton music faculty Michael Adamczyk on guitar, Glenna Sprague on piano, and vocalist Kathleen Carot, will be presented at 8 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 9, and at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 10. Five new Adamczyk compositions will be debuted including "There Was a Child Went Forth," based on Walt Whitman's poem of the same title. Four new pieces are set to lyrics by Glenview poet Ron Offen, including "October: Turtle Lake" and "On Turtle Lake: November" (based on the poet's experience living on a small Wisconsin lake), as well as "Maui Was Lovely . . ." and "Finding Litost."

Before joining the music faculty at Oakton, Adamczyk was an instructor of classical guitar at Valparaiso University. He has a master's degree from the University of Notre Dame, and is the author of The Know-It-All Guitar Book. Offen, editor of the Free Lunch poetry journal, has published four volumes of poetry and produces the Free Lunch Poetry Reading Series at both the Wilmette Public Library and Glenview Public Library.

Also at Koehnline Gallery, "Clearly Classical" is an afternoon of classical music and original compositions presented by Oakton faculty at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 24.

Tickets for both events are $8, and may be reserved by calling the Oakton Box Office at 847-635-1900.
