Got Game?
Oakton Introduces New Game Development Certificate

Puzzle solving, a little bit of magic, and lots of action are in store for students who enroll this fall in Oakton Community College's new Game Development Certificate program.

Video gaming is among America's most expansive industries - projected to grow from $6 billion in 2000 to $17 billion in 2005. The demand for creative game developers has grown dramatically with the recent introduction of several new game systems (Xbox, Dreamcast). Average salaries in this industry range from $60,000 to $80,000.

Oakton's new 37-credit-hour program teaches students the "tricks of the trade," from game design to programming. Topics include developing themes, establishing rules of play, and creating engaging 3D characters and backgrounds.

"The game industry is the largest employer of animation and multimedia specialists," says Berney Krule, professor of art and photography at Oakton. "There are very few academic programs available for this exploding industry, which combines artistic talent with technical knowledge and ability."

The new Game Development Certificate program helps prepare students for entry-level jobs as game designers, graphic artists, level designers, producers, and programmers.

Required courses for the program include 3-D Animation and Multimedia (ART 260), Multimedia Sound Production (ART 262), 3-D Illustration (ART 270), Game Modeling and Character Development (ART 274), and Game Portfolio Development (ART 276).
